Building Brand in Public

What transparency, feedback, and iteration taught us about growing a global brand people can trust.

Building Brand in Public

What transparency, feedback, and iteration taught us about growing a global brand people can trust

Why building our brand in public helped us learn faster—and build with more confidence

When speed wasn’t our biggest challenge

As Tanqory grew, we ran into a challenge many modern e-commerce brands recognize.

  • We were shipping features faster.
  • We were expanding across regions.
  • We had more data than ever before.

But speed wasn’t the hardest part. The real challenge was knowing whether the brand was moving in the right direction. In global commerce, speed without clarity creates risk. And clarity doesn’t come from internal assumptions alone. It comes from learning—early, often, and in the open.

That realization led us to a deliberate decision: to build our brand in public. Not to showcase polish, but to shorten the distance between learning and action.

Building in public isn’t about transparency—it’s about alignment

At first, “building in public” sounded like a communication choice. In practice, it became something far more important: a way to align brand decisions across teams, users, and markets.

When we shared what we were working on—and why—several things changed:

  • Feedback arrived earlier
  • Blind spots surfaced faster
  • Assumptions were challenged before they scaled
  • Innovation and technology discussions became clearer and more grounded

For e-commerce brands operating across the US, EU, APAC, and LATAM, alignment matters more than polish. Without it, growth fragments. With it, learning accelerates.

What brand evolution looks like in modern e-commerce

Brand evolution today isn’t driven by announcements or visual updates. It’s driven by how consistently a brand learns and adapts.

From brand refresh to brand evolution

  • A brand refresh changes how a brand looks.
  • Repositioning changes who the brand is for.
  • Brand evolution changes how the brand responds to reality.

In e-commerce, evolution happens through systems, feedback loops, and iteration—not campaigns.

Why we leaned into public learning

Several forces pushed us—and the brands we work with—to evolve faster.

  • Customer expectations move in real time: Customers expect improvement to be continuous. Waiting for “perfect” releases creates distance between brands and the people they serve.
  • Data without feedback slows learning: Analytics show what happened. Feedback explains why. Brands evolve faster when both are visible.
  • Global growth multiplies unknowns: New regions introduce new behaviors, regulations, and expectations. Learning in public reduces the cost of being wrong early—and helps brands adapt with confidence.

Patterns we saw while building in public

As we worked more openly, clear patterns emerged.

  • From controlled messaging to shared context: Instead of managing perception, we focused on helping people understand decisions.
  • From long roadmaps to short learning cycles: Smaller, frequent iterations revealed more insight than large, infrequent launches.
  • From internal certainty to external validation: Confidence didn’t come from being right—it came from learning quickly when we weren’t.

How this shaped the way we build Tanqory

Building in public reshaped how we think about product and brand. We began designing Tanqory to:

  • Support experimentation without disruption
  • Surface real usage signals early
  • Scale learning across teams and regions
  • Keep brands flexible instead of locking them into rigid structures

Tanqory isn’t built to enforce decisions. It’s built to support better ones.

A practical way to build and evolve in public

If your e-commerce brand is considering a more open approach to growth, start here:

  • Share progress before it’s polished
  • Ask for feedback before decisions harden
  • Release smaller changes more often
  • Treat learning as a team-wide metric
  • Design systems that expect change

These practices don’t slow teams down. They help teams move forward with confidence.

Building trust through visible learning

In global commerce, trust isn’t built through perfection. It’s built through consistency, clarity, and responsiveness. Building our brand in public taught us that learning works best when it’s visible.

Brand evolution doesn’t happen behind closed doors. It happens when platforms and brands grow—together.
